WoW ! The end of term 1—I am sure as we get older the time gets faster!
Last week we had an interesting visit from Jerome Kavanagh who showed us amazing Maori instruments. Everyone then made their own instrument out of clay. Keep practising as all will make a great sound.
The Great Ginger Beer experiment! What an interesting mix of flavours. Well done to all of you. Some of the designs were original and well prepared.

Camp—Thank you very much to all those responses to our camp—The decision is Camp Wainui –82%. So full steam ahead on the organisational and fundraising front!!

We had a great week last week - well done to those who represented us at the C.O. Swimming Sports. Jessie, Raimapaha and Shannon have made it through to the Otagos!
We have finalised the LIt Quiz teams with 6 girls making it in to the 2 teams - Etta, Courtney, Libby, Asia, Hazel and Bealee. The 2 teams will travel to Dunedin next Friday to compete against many others answering questions on books.
This week Mr Ellis is teaching on Thursday as I am released to do maths testing with individual children.
He has an interesting day planned.

We were lucky enough to secure a dance workshop with members from the Royal NZ Ballet -coinciding with their tour here of "Pinocchio". This workshop is optional and a separate notice was sent home.
We are also starting to prepare for the Student Led Conferences - a small note was sent home where you can write any goals you wish for your child if you have any specific requirements. The Y7/8 conferences will look different this year. Keep an eye out for extra information.

Last week we welcomed 3 new temporary students to the class - all from ChCh. Kaea, Issi and Bealee
On Friday afternoon at 1.30pm the P.T.A. are holding a welcome to Alexandra Primary School for all those new families to the school including all the families from Christchurch.
This week we have the C.O. Swimming Sports being held in Cromwell on Wednesday - Good Luck to all those competing.
Congratulations to the children from R4 who made it onto the Council - Emma, Molly, Etta, Ally, Talia,Shannon and Grace.
Homework - Keep up the great work on Mathletics this week - Some girls have already received a bronze certificate!! Go! GO!! Go!!!
Keep up the reading in bed - not one certificate has gone out yet (need to get to 5 books at your level)- Reminder to have filled out your RIB-IT chart with parent comment / signature for February. Please get these in this week. Reading in bed is reading for pleasure - when you can get really stuck into a book and not be distracted.
The great Ginger Beer challenge is starting this week -We are going to get our 'bugs' started'! Does anyone have some muslin / cheesecloth we could have? Enough to cover 10 jars is all. Any hobby gardeners out there with spare ginger?
We have been working on where to place an apostrophe - contraction and possession. See if you can find examples in everyday surroundings - shop windows, advertising, menus etc
Triathlon is coming up so some serious contenders may want to start training for this in their own time.

This week we are beginning our own statistical investigation - prepare to be surveyed!! We are also looking at a famous person and their qualities / skills / values and attributes that helped make them famous.
Our Kiwi Kwiz is going great - brain teaser this week -
‘I have six colours and billions of different looks’.
Mathletics is all up and running, every girl should have brought home a parent letter where you can REGISTER and check on progress. I have assigned everyone 2/3 tasks they must complete (on statistics) before they can unlock games. Please do 20 mins a night minimum this week on mathletics if possible. it is WORLD MATHS DAY on 1 March and for the entire week there are many games to play and try to score points with.
The RIB-IT folder will come home this week - please sign for February and make a comment about how their reading is going at home. Hopefully girls are spending time 20 mins reading in bed at night or at some other time.

Last week we had a Lit Quiz - questions all about books. I am putting together 2 tems to travel to Dunedin on Friday 25 March to compete in the Regional Lit Quiz. More details will follow for those students selected.

We have had Sue in talking about pubertal issues and also to the Y8's about the HPV Vaccine. Please read the info and return form - ASAP - Thursday at the latest!.
Last week we had a great ime at the Life Education caravan. We learnt about our bodies and the functions of the major organs, good nutrition - fuelling our bodies and finally about making decisions and what influences these decisions.
"If we are old enough to make a decision we are old enough to accept the consequences - good or bad"
Please encourage the girls to tell you about the influences, where they can go to get information so they can make informed decisions.
This week we have a visit from the health nurse going over 'issues and questions" the girls' may have - she will also cover information about the Y8 HPV vaccination.
Wednesday - Swim Sports!!! We will be walking up to the pool at 10.00ish and thechildren will be dismissed from thereat approx 2:45. Discuss with your child what they are to do - walk, get picked up, bike etc... If anyone has to return for a bus please let me know and we will arrange it.
Please try and wear some house colours - Cameron - Yellow, Blyth - Blue, Hopper -Red, Wright - green.
Our science investigation topic is Ginger Beer - The girls will work in small groups to make the 'best' ginger beer. They will also have to design labels and packaging to market their product.
The girls are working hard on their basic facts - 3x and 4x have been the focus - now we will consolidate our 2x and 5x this week. Please do some spontaneous 'quizzing' on all we have covered.
A request for magazines for collage work please. Last week the year 7's worked on a piece of art based on Henri Matisse.
A great thanks to all those students who have their morning program and homework ready - it is really interesting and we are learning lots!
Next week - Walk and Wheels - A competition for everyone to try and walk and/or wheel to school. Even if you catch a bus - walk / bike to the bus stop as this counts!!! We want to win the class competition - so get it organised!!!

Term 1 Week 3
Last week we had a focus on the 3x tables – great results Many girls have made it into the 20 sec club!!– Keep working hard – 4x here we come!!
Leadership training for all Y8’s on Tuesday – therefore the Y8’s will swim at 9:00 -9:30 tomorrow. Please be early for the bus leaves at 8:45 (bus pupils Y8’s we will wait if you cannot arrange anything else.)
Y7’s will go at the time of 11:00 – 11:30.
Swimming back to usual time for Wed and Thurs.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Meet the Teacher Tuesday 5:30 or 6:00.

The Peer Mediators have had their training, the PE shed roster is done and it is great to see so many girls volunteering to help out their school community – super citizens!!

What a fantastic first week—a huge thanks to everyone for having such a great attitude to learning. There is a great atmosphere and all girls are ready and willing to learn.
Last week we enjoyed learning softball skills and hopefully a few girls have gone on to join the school teams. Registration due in Monday 7 Feb!!
We have swimming this week—Tues, Wed, Thurs 9.30-10.00. Thanks very much to the parents who have volunteered to help out!

Our oral language programme starts this week—the children all have their roster of times and activities.
The main focus is on speaking clearly and confidently within a range of contexts.
We have started a focus on improving our reading comprehension, word and language skills. We are using ‘Reading Box’ and have individualised cards.
Our class novel is “The Hobbit” - very topical. This has great descriptive writing examples and is a perfect lead in to our own narrative (creative) writing.
The baby photos were really cute and a great ice breaker to our own personal qualities and attributes. We will be using these to help determine “Who is Alex?”

This year promises to be another exciting and busy year. Technology - Manual - The children travel by bus to the Terrace School for technology on a Friday morning. Girls need to be at school by 8:45 to catch the bus. The Terrace school will send a letter home with their requirements. CURRICULUM : Health-Week 3 Life Education Caravan-Focus:Making Choices
Numeracy - Statistics - Completing a Statistical Investigation - Mathletics - Census Integrated Studies - Our main theme this year is CITIZENSHIP. We are going to start off the year by looking at ourselves and our qualities. Who is Alex? ( What do we want to be when we leave A.P.S.?) Science - We will be using the Science Award scheme where students complete individual tasks on topics that interest them.
Homework
This year homework will consist of spelling, maths, reading. All students are registered for mathletics and will be using this in class as well as for homework.There may also be a variety of work that needs researching / finishing. Homework could be related to Values, M.I., Inquiry along with a few brain teasers/quiz etc. It is not designed to be onerous but build on essential skills and time management techniques. The format will be more like High School where students are encouraged to write down their requirements, manage their time and have work completed by the due date. Good practise!
A core component is the Morning Programme, part of oral language. Each child is rostered on a specific day and has a specific task to complete.
Reading is still important and I will use RIB-IT (Read in Bed –It’s terrific). Separate information will follow.
It is expected that a Y7/8 student will spend between 30-40 minutes completing homework 4 nights a week.
I understand that families are very busy and some nights students cannot complete their tasks.
If for any reason a child is unable to complete their homework a note signed by the parent can be written in their homework book or sent along to school.
Homework will not necessarily be on a sheet handed on Monday due in Friday.
A detailed timetable will be sent home in the homework book so children can be prepared for the next day.
